Where the Data Comes From
The statistics on this page are from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The NHTSA is part of the US Department of Transportation.
Companies that test self-driving cars are required to report crashes.
We analyzed the NHSTA’s Automated Driving Systems (ADS) dataset to calculate these statistics. You can download the raw data yourself from the NHTSA Standing General Order on the Crash Reporting page.
The Automated Driving Systems (ADS) dataset focuses on vehicles with an automation classification of SAE Levels 3–5. Vehicles classified as SAE Levels 3–5 have true self-driving features.
Here is a quick breakdown of the levels and what they mean:
- Level 3: The car drives itself in limited conditions but may ask the driver to take over.
- Level 4: The car drives itself under specific conditions without a driver, but it cannot handle all roads.
- Level 5: Fully autonomous, can drive anywhere a human could without driver input.
A few more notes and disclaimers about the data:
- Crashes are included if the ADS was active within 30 seconds of the crash and caused property damage or injury.
Some crashes may have multiple reports (updates from companies), and the data may include redactions to protect personal or confidential information. - This data was downloaded on May 8, 2025, and may have been updated since.
- Our number of total crashes in Las Vegas differs from the published NHTSA number on their dashboard. This is because, upon examination of the data set, some of the crashes in Las Vegas were attributed to California. We reviewed the incident notes to confirm that these crashes actually happened in Las Vegas, Nevada.
