Does Wegovy Cause Blood Clots?

Some early studies suggest a potential link between semaglutide and increased risk of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT), a type of blood clot. This has not been officially confirmed yet, though.

A 2021 Endocrine Journal study found that semaglutide may increase the risk of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT). Several lawsuits have been filed against Novo Nordisk, the manufacturer of Wegovy. Most current lawsuits focus on stomach-related injuries. Blood clot claims haven’t been included in the main lawsuit group, but affected users may still have legal options.

If you or a loved one took Wegovy and then experienced a blood clot, you may want to speak with a lawyer about your legal rights.

So, how is this medication linked to blood clots? Let’s explore the science behind this potential risk.

What Is Wegovy?

Medical Disclaimer: This content is for informational purposes only and is not medical advice. Consult your doctor about any health concerns.

Wegovy is a popular, FDA-approved injectable semaglutide medication like Ozempic. But unlike many semaglutide drugs, it is for treating obesity. Wegovy is effective in aiding weight loss. Wegovy is also FDA-approved to reduce heart attack and stroke risk in patients with obesity and heart disease.

According to a medical study, the average weight loss achieved while on Wegovy was 14.9% over 68 weeks.

How Does It Work?

Wegovy contains semaglutide, a compound that mimics hormones signaling fullness. By making patients feel full for longer, Wegovy reduces food intake, which can lead to significant weight loss.

What is the Relationship Between Wegovy and Blood Clots?

Normal blood clots, in themselves, are not dangerous. Blood clots are the body’s natural response to stop bleeding.

Problems arise when clots do not dissolve as they should or form in places like deep veins. DVT is a clot in a deep vein, usually in the legs. It is dangerous if the clot travels to the lungs, as it can cause a life-threatening pulmonary embolism (PE).

Here are some theories researchers have proposed regarding semaglutide and clotting risk.

Gastrointestinal Issues

Semaglutide can sometimes lead to gastrointestinal problems, like diarrhea. The research in the Endocrine Journal shows that diarrhea can result in dehydration. When the body loses too much fluid, the blood thickens, making clot formation more likely. This increases the risk of developing conditions such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Blood Clotting Imbalances

Dehydration may increase clotting risk, though this is not fully confirmed. When dehydration affects proteins like thrombin and antithrombin, the body may form clots faster than it can break them down. This imbalance raises the risk of developing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT). It can also lead to a potentially life-threatening condition known as Pulmonary Embolism (PE).

Inflammatory Reactions

Dehydration also triggers inflammatory processes that the body uses to heal. Some experts believe inflammation from dehydration might raise clot risks, but this needs more research. Some believe this may contribute to higher DVT or PE risk, but further research is required.

Have You Experienced Blood Clots While Taking Wegovy?

Have you or a loved one been taking Wegovy and noticed some strange symptoms? If you have felt leg pain, that may indicate DVT, or chest pain, which is a sign of a possible Pulmonary Embolism (PE). It’s vital to get medical help right away.

Steps to Reduce Risks While Using Wegovy

If you’re taking Wegovy, talk to your doctor about ways to reduce potential risks. Staying hydrated is one important step in lowering the risk of blood clots. Monitoring symptoms like leg pain or swelling can also help catch issues early.

Make sure to check in regularly with your doctor. This will increase your chance of using the medication safely and help prevent complications.

Other Potential Wegovy Side Effects

Wegovy can cause other side effects beyond the risk of blood clots. Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and rare vision problems, like NAION, have been reported in some Wegovy users. Other semaglutide drugs like Ozempic and Rybelsus have also been linked to blood clot reports, though no official warning exists.

If you notice any unusual Wegovy symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately. These side effects may worsen health, especially with dehydration or blood clot risks.
